The master frame makers at Safilo are responsible for bringing Burberry into the world of eyewear although their heritage in accessories is legendary.

Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry. A 21-year old drapers apprentice who opened up his first store in the town of Basingstoke, in the UK. After some testing years, he eventually built up the business by focussing on outdoor clothing that had waterproof properties weaved in.

The Burberry team have always been looking to forge ahead with new ideas and implement new technology. The logo of the charging knight introduced in the early 1900s bears a flag that reads “Prorsum”, which translates from Latin to “forwards”.

Their early eyewear collections held true to this. They combined classically styled aviators and square frames with lightweight metal and acetates to make the frames incredibly comfortable to wear and stylish to boot.

It took over 50 years for the Burberry mac to start to gain iconic style status. We predict eventually, their first sunglasses and glasses frames will get similar recognition, for their versatility and suitability for all occasions.
