The result is a collection of timeless Dior vintage eyewear, as highly coveted today as it was when they were first released.
Within our massive collection of vintage Christian Dior eyewear, you will find all types of vintage styles from cat eyes, aviators and of course the iconic oversized butterfly frames made from Optyl acetate that were so vogue in the 1980s.
The House of Dior has one of the longest histories of any of the major fashion houses when it comes to eyewear. Ever the innovators in business, Christian Dior was one of the first Haute Couture companies to enter into licensing agreements for their accessories and perfume lines. It started with a license their perfumes but, by the mid-50s, they came to an agreement to make their first luxury Christian Dior eyeglasses for women.
They released their very first glasses frames in the 1950s. Dior partnered with the Tura company to manufacture a small collection of luxury frames for modern women. These early glasses frame designs had more in common with jewellery than most eyewear on the market at the time! This cemented the Dior name as a manufacturer of artistic fashionable glasses rather than purely functional frames.
In the late 1960s, Wilhelm Anger of Carrera Optyl acquired the license to produce frames for the Dior brand. This proved a turning point for the Christian Dior eyewear collection. Using the Optyl acetate material that allowed frames to be lighter and more durable - Christian Dior sunglasses and glasses frames started to take on forms that would not have been possible before this partnership.
The vast majority of vintage Christian Dior sunglasses and glasses frames within our collection at Ed & Sarna Vintage are from the 1980s. Due to their massive popularity amongst opticians, a pair of Dior frames became accessible to the mainstream for the first time.
The sunglasses and glasses produced by Christian Dior during the 1980s contained designs of every shape and size. There were vibrant acetate oversized frames and elegant metal wire oval-shaped glasses, panto shapes and big pilot aviator styles. The Dior Monsieur range of eyewear for men also first appears in the 80s. Dior Monsieur is still considered a benchmark in design for stylish men’s glasses frames and sunglasses.
